Many metropolises around the world are facing enormous sustainability challenges that call for major paradigm shifts. The talk will present and discuss five major sustainability challenges facing major cities around the world including Hong Kong, namely climate change and energy challenge, development versus conservation dilemma, sustainable waste management challenge, urban environmental quality challenge and the challenges and opportunities of green and smart economy.

Environmental Protection Department (EPD)

Mr. AU Wai-Kwong Elvis, BBS, is the Deputy Director of Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of Hong Kong SAR Government responsible for environmental impact assessment and environmental planning, environmental compliance, water quality and sewerage programme, noise programme, community environmental programme and professional development. Mr Au has over 35 years of experience in various environmental and energy fields, including environmental planning and environmental impact assessment, environmental noise, corporate environmental management, cross-boundary environmental collaboration, building energy and oil and gas policy, water policy and sewage, waste management and waste to energy facilities, and nature conservation and biodiversity. He is the former President of International Association for Impact Assessment and the former Chairman of the Environmental Division of Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. Mr Au is both a professional environmental engineer and a professional urban planner.
