CMOS Terahertz Electronics: How to Manipulate EM-field On-chip

Future big-data oriented commuting requires energy efficient big-data communication. This talk will address this challenge by exploring electrical communication solution at millimeter-wave and sub-Terahertz (~100GHz) with source, transmission and detector all realized in CMOS. We will show that with the use of meta-device (CRLH tline, split-ring, spoof surface plasmon), one can effectively manipulate the EM-field phase such that phase-controlled devices (CRLH tline, split-ring) can be utilized to combine output power (3-5dBm) of coupled oscillator sources as well as in detection (-78 dbm). And surface-plasmonic device can be utilized for low-crosstalk (-21dB) and high data-rate (25Gbps) on-chip transmission. Demonstrated chips will be presented with measurements at 140GHz and 280GHz by standard 65nm CMOS process. What is more, the application in 140GHz wireless links using phase-arrayed beamforming will also be reported.


Speaker's Biography

Dr. Hao Yu obtained Ph. D degree from electrical engineering department at UCLA in 2007. Since 2010, he was with Nanyang Technological University and is now with Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), China. His primary research interest is in CMOS THz electronics for communication and sensing. He has ~200 peer-reviewed IEEE/ACM publications, 6 books, 1 best paper award of ACM Transaction, 2 keynote talks, 3 best paper award nominations (DAC’06, ICCAD’06, ASP-DAC’12), 3 student paper competition (advisor) finalists (IMS’15, RFIC’13, SiRF’13), 1 inventor award from semiconductor research cooperation (SRC), and 20 granted patents. He is associate editor (Nature-SciReports, IEEE TBioCAS, ACM TECS, Elsevier-Microelectronics etc.) and technical program committee member (IEEE-CICC, IEEE-ASSCC, ACM-DAC, ACM-DATE etc.) of many IEEE/ACM international journals and conferences. He is a senior member of IEEE and member of ACM.
