ECE Seminar   - Current Status and Future Predictions of 3GPP Satellite Communications

2:00pm - 3:30pm
Room 3598 (lift 27/28), Academic Bldg.

Abstract:

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is a paramount international organization responsible for establishing wireless communication standards. It has successfully developed standards for 3G, 4G, and 5G technologies, playing a significant role in advancing wireless communication. With the objective of establishing a globally unified public satellite communication standard, 5G Release 17 has enabled commercial 5G mobile phones to send emergency distress messages via satellites. Moreover, continuous improvements in voice call quality and data transmission speed have been achieved.

The ongoing development of 3GPP Release 18 aims to further expand the spectrum by extending frequency bands to 18GHz/28GHz. Through enhanced antenna designs, it will improve the speed and coverage of both uplink and downlink services. Additionally, 3GPP is dedicated to improving service continuity during handover between terrestrial and satellite networks. Furthermore, it is exploring the development of integrated air-ground 3D networks, which are crucial directions for the future of B5G/6G technologies.

This presentation will provide a comprehensive review of 3GPP's accomplishments in the field of satellite communications and introduce the latest discussions and advancements. The significance of satellite communications and 3GPP's efforts in promoting standardization in this domain will be emphasized. Moreover, the potential and application prospects of satellite communications in 5G, B5G/6G, and other future technologies will be discussed.
