Silicon photonic devices with subwavelength metamaterials

2:30pm - 3:30pm
ECE meeting room 2515-2516 (2/F via Lifts 25/26)

Introducing subwavelength grating metamaterials to silicon photonic waveguides and waveguide-based devices has opened new degrees of freedom to control light propagation on a photonic chip. In this presentation, I will present our research activities and recent advances in the development of subwavelength metamaterial devices for silicon photonics.

Speakers / Performers:
Dr. Winnie Ye
Full Professor in the Department of Electronics at Carleton University

Dr. Winnie Ye is a Fellow of Optica and a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) and a Full Professor in the Department of Electronics at Carleton University. She was also a Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Nano-scale IC Design for Reliable Opto-Electronics and Sensors from 2009 to 2021. Her expertise is in silicon photonics and its applications in telecommunications, data communication, biophotonics, and renewable energy. Dr. Ye received her B.Eng. degree in Electrical Engineering from Carleton University. She then pursued advanced studies in Photonics and received her M.A.Sc. and Ph.D degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Toronto and Carleton University, respectively. Following her doctoral studies, she joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University as a NSERC postdoctoral fellow. Dr. Ye returned to Carleton as a faculty member in 2009. She won the prestigious 2021 IEEE MGA (Members and Geographic Activities) Leadership Award, and the Partners In Research PIR's 2020 National Technology and Engineering Ambassador Award. She was the recipient of the 2018 IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Inspiring Member Award, the 2018 Engineering Medal for Research and Development from the Ontario Professional Engineers (PEO), as well as the PEO Ottawa Chapter's 2018 Engineering Excellence Award. In September 2019, Dr. Ye became a Carleton University teaching fellow after receiving the Provost's Fellowship in Teaching Award. She was the recipient of MRI's Early Researcher Award (ERA) in 2012, the Research Achievement Award from Carleton University in 2013, and the Research Award from Carleton's Faculty of Engineering and Design in 2021. From 2021 to 2023, she held the elected position of Chair of Optica's Photonics and Opto-Electronics Technical Division. She is the 2024 Chair-Elect of the IEEE Women in Engineering, and an elected member of Board of Governors of the IEEE Photonics Society.
